Shared Topic: Future Cataclysm Content Patches

Yes, it’s time to do some amusing (but oh so pointless) speculation of what the Cataclysm Patch Cycle will bring. I’m aiming for ‘serious’ here, but I’m guessing it will quickly mutate into unexpected hilarity, except probably more expected now.

And, it looks like it did almost immediately. I’ll whack on a bit of more serious forward-looking at the end of the post.

This is a Blog Azeroth Shared Topic, which is always a good way to write a thousand word post. Getting ideas is probably the hardest part of blogging, true story.

Here’s the prompt, for the terminally curious:

Although players are still busy digging through all of the Cataclysm raid and heroic content, some are already starting to wonder what we’ll see added to the game in the 4.1 patch and beyond. While we have some hints, what do you expect to see added over the life of the expansion? How many patches? How many new dungeons? What will happen to your favorite professions? And how will the expansion’s storyline continue to unfold — and which loose ends will be wrapped up by the time the 5.0 patch is released?

- Ringo Flinthammer

Okay, now on with the show.

4.1 – Keep on the Firelands *coughDnDReferencecough*

Now we know a fair bit about what is coming in 4.1 anyway, but here are my ‘wanted’ and projected major features.

Firelands Raid: Molten Core was just a Setback.

Someone will finally open that gate in the huge keep (probably too soon) that is in southern Hyjal, and will find 3 instances inside it. One, the Raid, and two 5 man dungeons, each with 3 (or perhaps 4) bosses.

In addition, there will be new Reputation Dailies for the Earthen Ring and Guardians of Hyjal, in Hyjal itself, probably 2 or 3 each, just to smooth off those Rep grinds for any characters who have a tiny amount left to gain with them.

4.2 – Tasty Vashj’ir Surprise

I’m thinking that 4.2 will probably have the Vashj’ir raid, perhaps split into two smaller raids, one that is just a single boss (did we end up killing sir-giant-freaking-squid-alot?) and one more standard one with a mixture of Naga and Twilight Hammer NPCs (like all the ones around the rift in Vashj).

There should probably also be a new battleground layout (CTF (WSG) reskin, as I doubt that Blizzard would be up for a reskin of AV :/ ),  and the creation of Heroic Mauradon (in preparation for 4.3) and Heroic Stockades (85 Hogger — read ‘fun’).

4.3 – This is why we don’t like Tauren goddesses

Two words: Killing Therazane. (Okay, the chances of this happening are astronomical, but to be fair, she’s the only one left, and she’s the most horrible of all the elemental lords, too (at least, the only one who has actually antagonized any players – Rag we went in there and tried to steal his mace, Air dudes are just kinda shifty and aligned with a dargon, Water dude doesn’t actually die, I guess?), and killing her would be an excellent capstone to the increasingly lame dallies that she made (makes) us do. (Seriously though, Hodir dailies at least were amusing to a degree, and the giant blue dudes at least had nice beards)

We would also (hopefully) get another 5 man, this time being similar to CoT-BM, or VH, in the case that it would involve killing waves of enemies for some reason. I don’t really care about lore reasons, just want the best type of 5man to be represented (what, they’re fun).

Lore wise, Deathwing would probably take this opportunity to make a Tactical Strike against Stormwind and Orgrimmar,  vomiting deadly death fire over Varian’s Statue and Garrosh’s Palace, enraging both racial leaders, who then go off to have a duel to the death on Deathwing’s back to see who gets to deliver the killing blow after the 4.4 Deathwing raid.

4.4 – Return of the (War)Chef(Chief)

This would be the boring, gratuitous Deathwing killing raid, the other bosses would probably comprise of the few members of the Black Dragonflight who are still crazy enough to hang with Deathwing, and anyone else who is about, I guess?

This patch should introduce a new faction, which would be probably a combination of the Earthen Ring and some Dragons, which would be primary a raid reputation, but also have a few daily or even weekly quests to gather war supplies or something that would give other players something to work towards, although they should probably gain reputation at a slowed rate (for instance ~6 rep for a proper trash mob, ~2 for low trash, ~125 for bosses, (~75 if championing in 5mans), and the few dailies would give like ~50 each), as it’s supposed to be a bit of a grind.

Presumably these guys would have some nice rewards, including new Epic Recipes for crafting professions (although I assume that we would see them in other raid tiers as well, these would be strictly reputation locked).

It would also be nice to see a couple more 5 mans, but it largely depends on how many others they release throughout the expansion.

5.0.1 – Loose Ends (and somewhat more serious ideas about the patch progression, but don’t tell anybody)

Plot wise, something major presumably happens after Deathwing is defeated (I’m going to assume he dies, but leaving my options open here) – I’d like to see another Burning Legion expansion, as I don’t really think that a Maelstrom/South Seas expansion would be opportune after the fluster-cluck that was Vashj, and seriously, the Burning Legion will have been just chillin for like 6 or 8 years (game time) at this stage, without doing anything interesting at all.

I also think that it would be strange to beat the Old God that corrupted Deathwing before Deathwing himself, so that’s why I didn’t put him in there and instead opted for the ‘Killing Therazane’ choice, even though it is highly unlikely. However he doesn’t really seem like a logical choice to focus an expansion around, I wouldn’t be surprised if a new villain is crafted throughout the latter stages of this expansion and throughout the next (assuming that the next will be another Burning Legion centric one), to set us up with somebody we know exists as a big bad.

Why? Because both Illidan and Arthas were fresh in people’s minds from Warcraft 3 (& TFT), and Deathwing was in Warcraft 2 (from memory, it’s been a long time since I last played it myself), and who else do we have left with that much infamy? Azshara? Feels too soon, but she would certainly be an option, I guess. Sargeras? Too strong, I think we’d have to focus on killing Kil’jaeden first, and K’j has a bone to pick with Azeroth as well (Sunwell was just a setback!).

Anyway, if you want my serious expectations as to what the patches will be, here they are in convenient list-form.

  • 4.1 – Firelands
  • 4.2 – Elemental Plane of Water
  • 4.3 – Probably a Titan/Old-god or Troll raid
  • 4.4 – Deathwing

Alternately, there is no 4.4, and 4.3 is Deathwing, which could also happen quite nicely.

Plot wise, I’m thinking that things will happen, and I will kill a huge internet dragon perhaps. Not really too fussed about it, to be honest.

Character Interviews : Selite

So, I’ve been inspired by this Shared Topic idea, by Azryu of  The Arcanery, and have decided to steal it for myself, and perhaps will end up doing all my characters in the future (and I mean all my characters, both from Warcraft and elsewhere). Therefore, today I have decided to go ahead a have a chat with Selite. This shouldn’t be too hard, everything I say she comments on anyway (at least in my head).

The crunch of leaves can be heard underfoot, as I step into the autumnal clearing.

There she is, sitting on a tree stump, with a tired look obvious upon her face. As I enter the clearing, she looks up at me, and says softly…

So, you’re here at last, huh? I was wondering when you would get here.

I go to open my mouth, but she continues regardless.

Are you surprised to see me here? Are you that daft?

I- well,”

You should know that I have a life of my own when you’re not looking through my eyes. You’re smarter than that.

I sigh, and step towards her, into the clearing. “Sure, but here, why here? A small clearing in the middle of Eversong Woods, of all the places in Azeroth, why right here?

Really? This is my home, you idiot.

She kicked up a bunch of orange leaves, which floated slowly to the ground in between us.

We stared at each other, assessing each other, for minutes.

Anyway, how’s magic working out for you?” I asked clumsily. ‘Oh god, this is even worse than unresolved sexual tension.’ I thought.

F-fine.

She looked at me like I had asked her to stab her mother in the face, mixed with the slightest hint of concern.

And what about you, how’s whatever you’re doing going?

I smiled. “Nice to know for all of your powers of precognition aren’t all powerful.” She glared slightly, before she gave me a strange look and smiled a little, realizing it was a joke. “I’m fine, by the way.

Good, good. Anyway… I’ve got to go. Uhh, take care of yourself, eh?

You too.” We smiled nervously at each other, before we both walked away.

Well, I’m not sure what to think of that. Both me and Sel are amazingly shy? Perhaps it is just the whole privacy thing. We would of been better off conducting this chat somewhere more public, like in Dalaran. Perhaps next time, eh? (Perhaps)

Twisted Nether Shared Topic: RPG Nostalga

So, to kick off this (hopefully) epic post, I guess I’ll quote the prompt. (If you aren’t familiar with my post style, things in pink/purple coloured brackets are from the mouth of my wonderful mage, who feels the need to interject every so often. (Shut up.))

Via Triv of Raid Naked.

How about a shared topic on RPG Nostalgia? Something along of the lines of your first love in the rpg universe, possibly even mmorpg universe.
For me it harkens back to the days when I first discovered MUD’s. I could actually play a game and interact with other people outside of my own home. It was amazing to me and so varied. MUD’s were the dreamchildren of individuals, and since they are individuals each MUD had it’s own flavor.
I would also add my initial rpg experiences such as Nethack or even console based games like Phantasy Star 3.. (awesome game). I would love to hear how other people fell in love with the genre. I think it would be a great topic to share because it expresses our individuality as well as our community in gaming. (we are all different but the same)
What do you think?

Okay, as a LONG time gamer, I’ve gotta go back a suitably long-ish time to find the first love of my RPG affair. It was probably one of the SNES Final Fantasy games.  Let’s say FF6. I know for a fact that I LOVED that game. No joke. I played it (in an emulator, how daring and pirate like) non stop for two to three weeks over the summer (christmas) holidays one year. Now, chances are that I’m looking back at it with rather rose tinted glasses, but it was a good example of an amazing JRPG.

Not too long after that, (years, that is) there was a game, that while I’d be hard pressed to call a proper RPG as we understand WoW, or FF, or DnD, was a masterpiece. It was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. OH MY GOD. It was beautiful. Music, graphics, gameplay, it was magical. This sparked a love affair with the Zelda series, and to date, I’ve 100% ed most of the games in the series. (The main ones, so, 1, 2, GB/GBC, SNES, Oracle games, OoT, Wind Waker, Majora’s Mask (I know it’s not a main one, but /shrug), OoT: Master Quest, Minish Cap, and one of the other ones, who’s name escapes my recollection.) In fact, I’m playing the SNES one (on GBA) and Link’s Awaking again at the moment. (Mainly because Link’s Awaking is hard as nails. Like soloing any content from 62+ on a squishy, not well geared mage hard, plus some more)

Then, the next game that really stands out for me was NEVERWINTER NIGHTS. This game was so, so, so awesome. It was my first Bioware game that made me go “WOW!” (because I never had a chance to play any of their older games) and despite the relative badness of the story campaign, the infinite number of AWESOME modules that had been created by members of the community made this one of my favorite games for a very, very long time. Then there were the two x-pacs, which had GREAT main adventures, and expanded the ruleset, adding in prestige classes and epic levels, making the game EPIC FUN. (Ho ho!) I must of spent about 4 years with that as my primary game on the PC.

Other games, that I can’t place on a timeline so much include, the time I played EQ1 at my aunt/uncle’s place, and was entranced by the vastness of it all (then I got killed by some crazy hard mob half a zone over), the first time I played Diablo (once again at their place), which (although mainly these are D2′s hardcore mode’s fault) has been the downfall of several mice.

Anyway, when it comes to the best RPGs of the various generations, we’ll have to go with the following.

SNES: Chrono Trigger – A masterpiece. If you haven’t played it, or gotten all the endings (and there’s tons of them, some radically different, too.) get the DS version. NOW.

GB/GBC: Pokemon Silver. Loved this game, too.

N64: Ooh, tough one. I’ll say Zelda, but I’m forgetting something else.

Gamecube: TALES OF MUTHAFUCKING SYPMHONIA. SO GOOD. One of the best RPGs, with a great story (there’s a great twist near the ‘end’ although, it doesn’t take much thought to see that it’s not the end for real) good length (40+ hrs, that’s focusing on the main quest), and fancy graphics. Loved it so much.

DS: Chrono Trigger. LOL JK. Actually, there are quite a few decent DS RPGs, but it’s hard to give a solid winner, when the best are all remakes of old SquareEnix games. I mean, really, look at the number of FF, DQ, and Crono Trigger remakes on there (like 6?).

PC: This is a hard one. Nethack, is awesome, and crazy crazy crazy tough. NWN is crazy good. More recently, other games have done allright. But the best is Diablo 2. Still racked up more hours on one character in that than I have with all my WoW toons combined. (Well, that’s a lie, D2 toon is at ~20 days though, so /shrug, WoW main is at well over 31, at last check (July-ish?))

Allright, I can’t be bothered writing any more. It’s still a good 500+ words for my portion, probably around 700+, in fact. Also, TWO POSTS IN ONE DAY?!!?!?! WOAH!!!
